By now the resemblance to dear old Ozzie is even more marked, not surprising at my venerable age, but like him, I’ve still got a few more shots left in the barrel, as long as I don’t keel over with a stroke – something that threatens with every concert I play with PARROCK, given the amount of energy and passion we put into our performance.
Taking as my example the “giants” of rock of that era, I started singing at the tender age of eight (not even old enough to have a wenkas) and after a few lessons in the tonic sol-fa from my local priest I came up with the band “the Bee White”, What, never heard of them? But of course you’re all too young, that was back in the heady days of 1968. Anyway, from that moment on I was afflicted with that terrible, incurable disease “acute progressive musichitis”.
All my Mum’s desperate pleading fell on deaf ears, not even regular kicks in the backside from my Dad could put an end to my schemes, and then, in 1971, came the call, from “IPOTESI”, a band that had gained a certain celebrity in the dance venues of Umbria, and so I finally entered the world where I belonged. What a drag it was though, doing the rounds in Umbria endlessly singing “Non son degno di te” and other such “golden” classics. But it all came in useful, practice makes perfect after all.
Then, finally in 1977 my apprenticeship came to an end and I embarked on my creative phase with my partner in crime Gianmaria Bertarini . That lasted three years when we touted our country-blues numbers round bars roofed out with drunks. Then “CAMION” were born, with Giorgio “pimples/piggy” Pericoli (guitar), Luciano Cerboni (bass) and Claudio Marchini (drums) and we had our first modest success. After a whole load of concerts, auditions and pain-in-the arse try-outs we got an option with RCA and our number “voglio vivere” was included in a promising newcomers compilation, but of course the new gets old and promises aren’t always kept………
By 1988 the dream was over, but that craving for my singing fix wasn’t, so yours truly joined in various projects, with Maurizio Colori in 1989 (bass player with what was then the Simonetti Orror Project), I founded the Pink Floyd cover group “Sunset” that, with a lot of departures and arrivals, has survived right up to now under the name ECHOES. With this latest incarnation I finally managed to cross the Italian border with a whole two gigs in….wow……Switzerland.
The years 1989 and 1999 kept me very busy, not only with ECHOES but also, RODIA, a 70s retro-outfit. With them I made a CD with none other than, the one and only, that mega-guitarist MAURIZIO SOLIERI, late of the Vasco Rossi band
With C.O.C (Carlo, Ornella; Claudio) an acoustic piano bar type trio.
With COUNTRY COSTA OVEST with a couple if ex-CAMION members doing West Coast and Eagles stuff.
Then in 2000, came the final hammer blow when PARROCK and ARKY DAKY (may they rot in hell!) burst onto the scene, two heavy metal bands paying exclusive homage to one of my all time favourites Deep Purple. ARKY were even better than the original, but after three years they threw in the sponge, for reasons I still can’t work out ………….. shame!! At this point PARROCK are still going strong, with a groove and a stage presence that totally knocks me out… and they probably will do, literally, with that stroke …..HERE WE GO, YEAH…HEI MATES F--K YOU-!!!!
